Page From: 36 To: 42

Article abstract:
Introduction & Objective: Cesarean section (CS) is performed under two methods: local anesthesia and general anesthesia. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. Considering the role of mothers in choosing the type of anesthesia, the present study was conducted to determine the pattern of choosing the type of anesthesia for cesarean section based on the desire of mothers and related factors. Materials & Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at AL Zahra hospital during 2020. Pregnant women who were admitted to this hospital enrolled the survey and underwent a face-to-face interview. The questionnaire included questions about the patient's demographic data, her choice of method for anesthesia in cesarean section and some related factors. Data were collected, coded and entered into SPSS 22 software. Mean and standard deviation (95% confidence interval) were used to describe quantitative variables with normal distribution and for quantitative variables with abnormal distribution; the median and amplitude (interquartile range) were used. Qualitative variables were also described based on number and percentage. The normal distribution of the quantitative variables was measured using Kurtosis and Skewness, Q-Q Plot, Box plot and Shapiro-Wilk test. Chi Square test was used to analyze the data and Fisher's Exact Test was used if it was not valid. The significance level was considered (P < 0.05). Results: A total of 133 pregnant women participated the study with the mean age of 31.45 ± 6.91years. Among them 57.9% preferred general anesthesia (GA). The main reason of avoiding GA was fear of not awaking from anesthesia (98.2%), while the main one for spinal anesthesia was concern of low back pain (92.2%). Fear of awaking while performing the procedure (61%) and hearing the surrounding voices (42.9%) were other reasons. A significant relationship was observed between the source of information and the choice of anesthesia procedure. The choice of general anesthesia in pregnant women whose source of information were those around them (P = 0.024) and other patients (P < 0.001) was significantly higher. In women whose source of information was a gynecologist (P < 0.001) and the Internet (P = 0.004), the choice of spinal anesthesia was significantly higher. But there was no statistically significant relationship between education level, previous anesthesia history and knowledge of anesthesia technique with the choice of anesthesia method. Conclusions: Based on the effect of the type of information source on the choice of anesthesia by pregnant women, it is concluded that during pregnancy visits and anesthesia visits, doctors should give more explanations about the advantages and disadvantages of anesthesia methods.
