Article abstract: Introduction & Objective: In this study, we decided to investigate the urodynamic test abnormalities in patients with spinal canal stenosis and disc herniation who referred to the urology Clinic of Shohada-e-Tajrish Hospital in year 2017.
Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all patients with spinal canal stenosis and discs herniation referred to the Urology Clinic of Shohada-e-Tajrish Hospital in year 2017 were evaluated for demographic, clinical and Urodynamic findings.
Results: In this study, 220 patients (146 males) with mean age of 56.3 ± 8.06 were studied. Of these 220 (146 men) patients, 136 patients (89 men) had disc herniation with a mean BMI of 25.07 ± 2.1 and 84 patients (57 men) had spinal canal stenosis with a mean BMI of 24.7 ± 4.07.
Among 136 patients with disc herniation, 81 had L4-L5 level herniation, 43 had L5-S1 level herniation and 12 had both L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels, and also, of 84 patients with spinal canal stenosis (57 men), the stenosis in 78 was at the lumbar spine level and in 6 in the thoracic spine level. The most common findings of urodynamic test in patients with spinal canal stenosis were detrusor underactivity and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia and in patients with disc herniation were detrusor underactivity, detrusor sphincter dyssynergia, and detrusor overactivity
Conclusions: It was found that patients with discs herniation especially in the lumbar and sacral levels, can develop urinary symptoms especially bladder underactivity and spastic neurogenic bladder with low back pain, especially in the lumbar and sacral levels, it is very important to pay attention to this cases. As a result, the necessary diagnostic tests should be performed and in order to treat urinary symptoms, the underlying cause should be eliminated so that the quality of life of these patients does not decrease.
