Abstract
Introduction & Objective: Understanding of the factors that cause the conversion of laparoscopic to open surgery is a good way for helping surgeons to choose the right treatment for each patient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the gallbladder wall thickenings for the change of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open surgery. Materials & Methods: 619 patients who were candidates for laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery enrolled in our cross-sectional study. Patients’ information including: age, gender, diagnosis, gallbladder wall thickness, and conversion factors were collected. SPSS version 20, T-test, X2 test and Logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis. Results: 31 cases (%5) were led to conversion, and 588 patients (%95) did not need conversion to open surgery. In this study, 219 patients (%47) had thicknesses less than or equal to 3 mm of which 4 patients (%1.4) were converted to open surgery and 287 patients (%98.6) were not. Also, among 328 patients (% 53) who had thicknesses more than 3 mm, 27 patients (%8.2) were converted to open surgery.
