Nowadays, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is increasing. On the other hand, the indications for implanting pacemakers and defibrillators are also increasing. When these patients undergo diagnostic or therapeutic procedures for other physical problems, pacemakers in the patient's body may cause interference or risks for the patient. This article aims to provide practical recommendations to reduce these problems in cardiac patients with pacemakers and other implanted devices, who require surgical interventions. Although patients with pacemakers in non-cardiac surgeries are evaluated by cardiologists before surgery, awareness of the interference between pacemakers and surgery and how to deal with it helps to increase patient safety during surgery. The goal of these recommendations is to ensure a safe and effective surgical strategy in patients with pacemakers and to reduce unwanted consequences. Unwanted consequences are not limited to device damage, inability of the device to pace or deliver shocks, lead damage, altered pacemaker performance, and inappropriate shocks. Other possible complications include low blood pressure, various types of arrhythmia, myocardial tissue necrosis, infarction, and myocardial ischemia. Increased length of stay, delayed and canceled surgery, readmission due to improper device performance, waste of hospital resources, and additional costs are other undesirable complications that can be listed.
