Report on the Scientific Activities of the Iranian Association of Surgeons (Years: 1985-2025)

Abstract
In the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution and during the onset of the imposed war, Iranian surgeons encountered a profoundly significant challenge: an overwhelming surge in war casualties necessitating immediate and specialized medical attention. The situation was further exacerbated by the lack of experience among surgeons in addressing injuries specific to warfare, which diverge considerably from conventional surgical practices. In light of these extraordinary challenges, the establishment of a dedicated scientific organization became profoundly necessary. This organization was designed to enhance the knowledge of surgeons, provide training in the treatment of war-related injuries, and ensure that they remained abreast of the most recent advancements in global surgical methodologies. On December 17, 1985 (26 Azar 1364), a group of visionary surgeons convened to form the founding committee, subsequently extending invitations to their esteemed colleagues. This initiative culminated in the participation of seventy-four surgeons who played an instrumental role in establishing the first governing board of the Iranian Association of Surgeons, in accordance with the bylaws sanctioned by the Ministry of the Interior. As a result, an inclusive association representing all surgical specialties within Iran was formed. The preamble of the Association's bylaws articulates its mission as follows: "In recognition of the necessity for unity and collaboration among the nation's surgeons, and acknowledging the shared scientific and practical elements across various surgical disciplines, the Iranian Association of Surgeons is established to elevate the field of surgery in Iran while maintaining the identity and integrity of specialized surgical associations." Shortly following its inception, branches of the Association were established in Isfahan, Shiraz, Khorasan, Tabriz, Gilan, Mazandaran, and several other regions over subsequent years. The Association's inaugural scientific congress was convened under challenging circumstances in Isfahan on February 11, 1985 (22 Bahman 1363). The active involvement and unwavering support of the then-Minister of Culture and Higher Education, who was a founding member, were instrumental in the successful execution of this event. This milestone significantly contributed to the consolidation and continuous advancement of the Iranian Association of Surgeons, whose endeavors are flourishing to this day.
