Abstract
The American Civil War was the first major armed conflict in which guns and bullets became real killers. More than ninety percent (90%) of the injuries sustained during the war were caused by gunshots. The increasing sophistication of the weapons used during the wars fundamentally changed the way surgical care was provided. The sheer number of wounded and injured (in the Union Army alone, 100,000 soldiers died on the battlefield, 225,000 from disease, and 25,000 from accidents, suicides, and the like) led to the design and use of a system for dealing with mass casualties, including first aid stations, field hospitals, and general hospitals.
